First National Bank Announces Winners of 2018 Community First Awards

Winning Nonprofit Organizations to Receive $25,000, $10,000 and $5,000 Cash Donations

OMAHA, Neb. September 17, 2018. – First National Bank has announced the winners of its 2018 Community First Awards, said Alec Gorynski, Vice President, Community Development and Corporate Philanthropy. The Community First Awards recognize and reward nonprofit organizations who are working to strengthen communities across the bank’s service area. The top organization will receive $25,000 to support a project or program that will make a significant and tangible community impact. One second-place winner will receive $10,000 and one third-place winner will receive $5,000.

The first place winner is Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands (DSA), located in Elkhorn, Nebraska. They will use the $25,000 donation to help build the REACH center, which will strive to change the way the world views a Down syndrome diagnosis and send a global message of acceptance for all. DSA serves over 400 families across Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa and the REACH Center will ensure these families are never alone. From a prenatal diagnosis to career skills, DSA will make a lifetime commitment to remain by parents' side.

The second place winner is Heartland Humane Society, located in Yankton, South Dakota. With the pet population at an all-time high in the Yankton area, veterinary resources are limited and owners often decide not to provide basic veterinary care to their pets. Heartland Humane Society will use their $10,000 donation to team up with local veterinarians to provide low-cost basic vaccinations and a spay/neuter clinic to area pet owners to help control diseases and the local pet population.

The third place winner is Open Door Rehabilitation Center, located in Sandwich, Illinois. Open Door Rehabilitation Center has been providing vocational, residential, day and community support services to adults with developmental disabilities for over 53 years. They will use the $5,000 donation to help remodel an inaccessible bathroom in the group home in order to provide a safe, fully handicap-accessible space.

First National Bank kicked off the 2018 Community First Awards in late July, inviting nonprofit organizations to nominate their community project or program during a two-week period. Qualifying nominations were presented to First National Bank employees, who voted to select 20 finalists. The public was then invited to vote between August 27 and September 7 for the nonprofit organization they believe has made a significant contribution to the growth and strength of their community. Overall, a total of 260 nominations were received from nonprofit organizations, 2,500 employee votes were received and more than 25,000 public votes were cast.
