Safe Online Shopping Tips for the Holidays and Beyond

Author: Jeff Weeks, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer

The holiday shopping season is here! One of the quickest and easiest ways to purchase gifts is to buy online. During this busy time of year, don’t let your guard down. Here are a few tips to make your shopping experience safer.

Update your software: Keep your operating system, web browser, and antivirus software up to date to ensure that you have the latest security patches.

Use two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of authentication, such as a code sent to your phone.

Avoid public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured, which makes it easy for hackers to intercept your data. If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a virtual private network to encrypt your data.

Use strong passwords: Use a unique and complex password for each of your accounts. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. You can use a password manager to help keep track of your passwords.

Be cautious of phishing scams: Be wary of emails or messages that ask you to click on a link or provide personal information. Always verify the sender’s email address and check the URL of the website before entering any sensitive information. Some phishing scams to be aware of during the holidays:

  • E-cards: Be wary of opening e-cards. These are a common attack method during the holiday season. When in doubt, contact the sender to ensure the e-card came from them.
  • Charitable donations: If you wish to make an online donation during the holidays or any time, don’t give via a link in email or social media. The safer way to donate is to visit the website of the charity you wish to donate to. If you are donating to a new or unfamiliar charity, be sure to conduct research before donating or sharing personal information.
  • Gift card scams: If you receive an email asking you to purchase gift cards, possibly to be reimbursed or attempting to have you purchase them with work funds, contact the requestor directly to verify the request is legitimate.
  • Only shop on trusted online retail sites. There are lots of great deals offered around the holidays. It is best to go directly to the known web address of your preferred retailer. Resist the urge to click on links in emails and on social media sites. Look for the padlock icon in the address bar of your browser to ensure that the website is secure. Also, make sure the URL starts with “https.”

Check your bank statements: Regularly check your bank statements and credit card transactions for suspicious activity. Report any unauthorized transactions to your bank or credit card company immediately.
