You're on vacation, having the time of your life when you get a heart-sinking alert — a bank transaction you don't recognize. Time is of the essence — a criminal has your card or card number and can quickly drain your money with unauthorized purchases. If you have card lock set up, within minutes you can lock your card from further purchases and contact your bank to figure out the next steps.

But, what exactly is card lock and how and when should you use it?

Card lock is a security feature that allows you to temporarily disable your credit or debit card. This can be helpful if you lose your card, think it may have been stolen, or simply want to prevent unauthorized purchases. Some people even use it to help curb their spending habits!

How to Use Card Lock

To use card lock, simply log into your online banking account or mobile app. Once you are logged in, each card will have an option to lock or unlock the card. Just select the "Lock" button. Once it has been locked, no new purchases will be authorized. You will still be able to use your card for any recurring payments, such as your monthly bills. To unlock your card, click on the "Unlock" button. With a simple switch, you will be able to use it for all purchases. It's that quick! If you find your misplaced card, you can immediately start using it.

Reasons for Using Card Lock

  • When you've lost, misplaced, or have a stolen card. Whether you've forgotten which wallet you put your card in or you know for a fact it has fallen into nefarious hands, card lock is a good first step in protecting your finances.
  • When you're traveling. Locking a card, you don’t intend on using often when you travel can be a smart way to help prevent unauthorized activity on your card or with your card number. Traveling can be hectic enough without having the added worry of potential theft. Simply lock it when you know you won't be reaching for it any time soon and unlock it before you're ready to bring it out.
  • When you're sticking to a budget. Card lock isn't just helpful in keeping criminals away from your money; it can also help you avoid making impulse purchases. Some people find it helpful to lock credit cards when going out to avoid the temptation of overspending.
  • When you don't use a card very often. If you have a card that's not part of your regular rotation, it can be a good idea to keep on lock since it might not always be top of mind.

Things to Keep in Mind When Using Card Lock

  • Card lock is not a substitute for canceling your card. While card lock should be your immediate first step if you believe your card has been lost or stolen, you will need to contact your bank or financial institution immediately to report it.
  • It may not be available for all cards. Check with your bank to see if your card is protected.
  • Don't let it be the only tool in your arsenal. Using features like Online Banking, BillPay, and Account Alerts are all great ways to ensure your money and financial information are safe and secure.
  • Card lock is not account lock. If you're locking a debit card, keep in mind you are not locking your checking account, just your card.

Card lock is a valuable security feature that can help protect you and your financial information. By understanding how and when to use it, you can give yourself peace of mind and more control over your money.
